Anderson Independent Mail -
Letter to the Editor: An AARP thank you

Thanks to action by the House Ways and Means committee and our local representatives Brian White and Dan Cooper, more than 5,000 older South Carolinians will continue to receive home-delivered meals and community-based services like personal care aids, adult day care services, transportation, nutrition education and respite care services in 2009.

More than 100 Anderson County senior residents will continue to receive these services. The House Ways and Means committee agreed to continue funding the $2.9 million in the 2008-2009 state budget.

These services are critical in helping older adults in South Carolina remain independent and able to live in their own homes. Without this funding, many of the seniors would end up in nursing homes, often at much greater costs to our state. We are grateful for representatives White and Cooper for their support and hard work.

John Garman, AARP, Volunteer Legislative Representative, Anderson
